The switch-off

Traditional phone lines are being switched off. Permanently.

The UK’s Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN), the copper-wire infrastructure that has carried phone calls since the Victorian era, is reaching the end of its life. Openreach will switch it off completely in January 2027. That includes ISDN lines, analogue phone systems, and FTTC broadband connections that rely on the copper network.

Jan 2027
Full switch-off deadline

After this date, PSTN and ISDN lines will stop working entirely. Businesses that haven’t migrated will lose their phone service with no fallback.

Some providers are already stopping new orders on ISDN and traditional lines. The migration needs to happen now, not in December 2026.

What’s being switched off?

All PSTN lines, ISDN2, ISDN30, analogue phone lines, and any broadband or phone service running over copper infrastructure.

Who does this affect?

Every business in the UK that uses a traditional phone line, including businesses on hosted VoIP that still use ISDN trunks to connect to the network. It also affects lift phones, alarms, and card payment terminals connected via analogue lines.

What do you need to do?

Migrate to a cloud-based VoIP phone system using SIP trunks or a hosted PBX. All calls are routed over your internet connection, no copper required. WikiTech handles the full migration.

Why act now?

Migrating a phone system takes time: number porting, system setup, user training. Leaving it late risks disruption. Businesses that move now also typically save money immediately on line rental and call costs.

Our commitment to you

12-month rolling contracts. You stay in control.

Traditional phone providers are notorious for locking businesses into lengthy contracts, sometimes as long as 8 years. We think that’s wrong. Our telephony runs on a simple 12-month rolling contract, and every contract includes a 60-day exit clause. If you’re not happy, you’re free to leave. We’re that confident in our service.

Because everything runs in the cloud, your phone system belongs to your business, not to us. Your numbers, your configuration, your system: it all comes with you if you ever move on. We deploy, we support, and we make ourselves worth staying with, not impossible to leave.

12-month rolling contract

No lengthy lock-ins. Just a fair, annual term that renews when you’re happy to renew it.

60-day exit clause, always

Every contract includes a 60-day exit clause. If we’re not delivering, you’re not trapped. We include this because we’re confident you won’t need it.

Your system. Your numbers.

Cloud-hosted means everything is portable. Numbers, settings, and configuration don’t live on our infrastructure, they belong to your business.

Hardware

Desk phones, for those who want them.

All our platforms include softphone apps, so a physical desk phone isn’t a requirement. But for staff who prefer a traditional handset, we supply and configure Yealink phones, one of the most widely used business phone brands in the UK.

VoIP migration · Cost saving

Kent professional services firm: from £600/month on ISDN to under £200/month on VoIP

A 20-person professional services business in Kent had been on the same ISDN phone system for over a decade. The system worked, but it was expensive, inflexible, and tied entirely to the office. During and after the pandemic, staff working from home had to divert calls to personal mobiles, giving out personal numbers and missing calls when signal was poor.

Their monthly phone bill had crept up to over £600/month: line rental, call charges, and maintenance on ageing on-premise hardware. When their provider informed them the ISDN lines would be discontinued, they approached WikiTech to manage the migration.

We migrated them to a cloud-hosted VoIP system with SIP trunks, number porting for all existing numbers, and a softphone app for every staff member. The entire migration ran seamlessly out of hours, so they kept every phone number and their team started the next working day on the new system.

Their monthly bill dropped to under £200. Every team member can now open an app on their mobile or laptop and work exactly as if they were in the office: same number, same extension, same features. No forwarding. No missed calls. No personal numbers given out.

FAQ

Common questions.

Will my existing phone numbers be kept?
Yes. We manage the number porting process end-to-end. Your existing numbers, whether geographic (01/02), freephone (0800), or non-geographic (03/08), can be ported to your new VoIP system. The porting process typically takes 2 to 4 weeks, during which calls continue to be received on your existing system. There is no gap in service.
Do we need new hardware to switch to VoIP?
No. All the platforms we supply include softphone apps for desktop (Windows and Mac), browser, iOS, and Android. Your staff can make and receive calls on their existing computers and mobile phones from day one. Physical desk phones are optional: we supply Yealink handsets for staff who prefer them, but they’re not a requirement.
What internet connection do we need?
VoIP calls use very little bandwidth, typically around 100kbps per simultaneous call. Most business broadband connections are more than sufficient. We’ll assess your connection as part of the setup process. For businesses with slower connections or reliability concerns, we can advise on whether a broadband upgrade makes sense alongside the VoIP migration.
Which platform is right for us: Teams Voice, 3CX, or VoiceFlex Flow?
It depends on how your business works. If you’re already using Microsoft 365 and Teams heavily, Teams Voice is usually the simplest option: calls happen inside the app you’re already using every day. If you need a full-featured phone system with call queues, IVR, and reporting, 3CX or VoiceFlex Flow are better fits. We’ll recommend the right platform based on your setup, team size, and requirements, not based on margin.
What happens to our phones during the migration?
We plan all migrations to run seamlessly out of hours. Typically, we set up the new system in parallel with your existing one, port numbers at a scheduled time (usually overnight or over a weekend), and verify everything is working before the old system is decommissioned. For most businesses, the switchover is seamless.
Is VoIP reliable? What if our internet goes down?
Modern cloud VoIP systems are highly reliable, with uptime typically 99.99%+ at the platform level. The main risk is your internet connection. We mitigate this in a few ways: mobile softphone apps mean staff can switch to 4G/5G data automatically, calls can be diverted to mobile numbers if internet is lost, and for businesses where uptime is critical, we can discuss backup connectivity options. In practice, internet outages are rare and brief for most businesses.
Does this need to be managed by WikiTech’s IT support team?
VoIP is supplied as a managed service alongside our IT support. Because your phone system is part of your IT infrastructure, connected to your network, integrated with Microsoft 365, and accessed from the same devices, it makes sense for it to be managed by the same team. We handle setup, configuration changes, number porting, user additions, and any faults. You don’t need to involve a separate telecoms provider.

Don’t wait until 2027. Move to VoIP now and save money today.

Most businesses that switch to VoIP reduce their monthly phone costs significantly, and get a better, more flexible system in the process. A 15-minute assessment costs nothing.
